Who we are

The Foundation for Mother and Child Health (FMCH), known locally as Yayasan Balita Sehat, began as a support group for english speaking mothers and has grown into an organisation that provides support and educational programmes for impoverished Indonesian mothers and their children. Our goal is to eliminate malnutrition and the causes of poverty in the communities we serve. In 2001 we opened a mother-and-child centre in South Jakarta and became a registered charity under Indonesian law.

Activities for Indonesian mothers and children

The Foundation for Mother and Child Health/Yayasan Balita Sehat, provides meals, medical care and lessons for both Indonesian mothers and their children. Mothers have access to health education and small skills training programmes and children have the opportunity to benefit from a preschool education and primary school scholarships. Many of the children suffer from undernutrition and all of them come from impoverished backgrounds.

Our staff includes two doctors, five preschool teachers, a programme manager, a medical and educational scholarship coordinator, a handicraft teacher, two sewing teachers, three health educators and a cook. In addition to these paid locally-engaged staff, the centre relies on 8 local volunteer community workers and international volunteers from the UK, New Zealand, Australia and the US. These volunteers help in various roles: nutrition, primary school teaching and nursing/midwifery.

FMCH runs early learning centress (ELCs) in South Jakarta. These centres enable children from poor families to attend preschool. One ELC focuses specifically on providing preschool education for impoverished children living on garbage dumps. In the near future we hope to open another preschool for children from similar backgrounds.

Alongside these early learning centres, FMCH has set up a very successful scholarship system that allows sponsors to fund children through primary school.

Amongst its other activities, the Foundation conducts a series of health education programmes for both mothers and community health workers living and working in urban slum areas in South Jakarta. Classes are given by the Foundation’s team of health educators and community health workers and address topics such as health, hygiene and nutrition.

Programmes conducted at FMCH have grown tremendously and with help from all our important sponsors we hope to see further growth in the future.

The New Mother Support Group was originally set up to enable expatriate english speaking mothers receive advice from volunteer nurses and midwives on topics such as breastfeeding, weaning and sleep problems. Over time, a committee of expatriate and Indonesian mothers from the Mother & Baby Support Group have worked together to produce a handbook for new parents of all nationalities living in Jakarta: ‘The Family Guide to Jakarta’. Profits from the sale of the book go towards supporting programmes run by the Foundation for underprivileged Indonesian mothers and their children.

Kalau Weekend Enaknya Ngapain Ya? 9

Sudah beberapa hari ini saya gak nulis artikel di curipandang tersayang ini. Bukan, bukan karena bosan. Lebih karena energi terserap untuk meeting sana-sini. Senyum sana-sini, deadline sini-situ. Ditambah dengan haha-hihi-huhu dengan pasangan. Energi habis terus malas nulis, padahal ide di otak udah numpuk aja gitu. Hal yang sama pasti juga terjadi dengan anda. Saya yakin itu!.

Tiba-tiba  weekend sudah datang aja. Sebenarnya aroma weekend ini sudah mulai terasa Hari Jumat, pikiran mulai terbelah antara senang-senang dan pekerjaan yang masih aja datang, iya gak? iya gak? :D. Nah, weekend yang ditunggu-tunggu itu adalah waktu yang tepat untuk recharge energi, paling tidak #50persen supaya semangat tetap stabil pas balik lagi ke aktivitas.

 
Nah, untuk tetap semangat di hari kerja, weekend-nya mesti cihuy donk! Kalau saya untuk bikin cihuy weekend biasanya begini:


1. Bangun pagi. Segar bugar. Heran ya padahal kalau hari kerja tuh bangun siangan dan gedebukan. kalau besoknya Sabtu kayaknya otak sudah kayak mesin aja bangun pagi.

2. Olahraga murah meriah sederhana. Jelek-jelek begini saya mulai sadar tentang pentingnya olahraga, bukan untuk tubuh yang kurus tapi untuk badan yang sehat.  saat ini baru dua, murah dan sederhana. Pertama jalan cepat ke pasar Tebet Barat (beli ketupat sayur, bwahahah), terus balik ke rumah dengan jalan yang berbeda yang lebih panjang. Olahraga lainnya? badminton donk! murah meriah pakai halaman depan rumah satu set 30 menit, biasanya paling lama 2 set. Ditambah satu set lagi jadi sparing partner balita-balita, yang ini paling menguras tenaga sebenarnya. 

3. Beberes rumah atau kamar. Walaupun hanya dua minggu sekali minimal ganti sprei, cuci sepatu, ngerendem baju baru *ups* atau menata ulang buku-buku lumayan juga bikin seger.

4. Berburu dvd dan manisan jambu! pokoknya cuci mata deh. Kalau nonton pas weekend jarang. soalnya mehel, apalagi kalau tengah bulan :D. Kalau minggu ini kayaknya ada brightspot di PP, tapi kantong lagi cekak. Atau ada pemutaran video kreatif di kota tua, bisa jadi alternatif. Saya jarang ke pameran, biasanya konsumtif, jadi agak dihindari.

5. Kongkow-kongkow bareng teman juga bisa jadi alternatif lho. Berbagi cerita itu seperti recharge energi buat saya. Biasanya setelah ketemu teman-teman, cerita-cerita, terus bikin resolusi mau kayak gini- gitu. hihihi, jadi orang yang banyak maunya biasanya banyak juga resolusinya. Eh, kalau mau lihat resolusi-resolusi yang inspiratif, di resolusi50persen.com lucu-lucu lho :D, dapat hadiah lagi, hihihi.

 
6. Pergi ke salon atau ke spa, pijit-pijit cantik seluruh badan. Ganti gaya rambut, bersihkan daki dan pikiran kotor di tempat yang rileks kayak salon itu perlu sesekali. Saya nulis artikel ini aja setelah mandi cantik-cantik lhooo :D *pamer*.


7. Baca buku atau koran untuk mengupdate informasi secara lengkap dan utuh. Masak twitteran terus. :D

8. Makan-makan! :D, misalnya saya punya ritual makan soto tiap weekend. Atau berburu menu baru di Pasar Tebet Barat, yang penting makan dan berduaan deh :D. 

Eh, itu baru contoh-contoh yang biasanya saya lakukan lho. Setelah mengisi weekend dengan berbagai macam kegiatan itu secara bergantian, untuk mempersiapkan mood di Hari Senin lebih baik, saat ini saya punya lagu kebangsaan Lucky-nya Mraz sebagai penyemangat kegiatan di hari-hari berikutnya, supaya resolusi dan target saya tiap bulan bisa tercapai sedikit-demi sedikit, ya paling gak #50persen . Happy Weekend dan selamat menambah energi!
